Puerto Morelos Marina El Cid - Cancun Cozumel Area

Fri Sep 05 2008, 11:46AM

A very slow week at Puerto Morelos, lacking anglers for the boats.  According to the Fleet Manager, Armando Gutierrez, there were only 3 fishing days for the week but the fishing was filled with good action.  The overall fish counts reflected 1 sailfish, (unusual for this time of year) 13 giant barracuda, 1 red snapper, 1 yellow snapper, 1 amberjack and 3 triggerfish

PM Climate:  Mostly cloudy with seasonal pm showers, high humidity and temps from 77 nights to 97 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:  The normal, easterly tropical breezes at 10-15 knots with light surface wind chop, temps at 82-83 degrees throughout the area.

Best Bait/Lure:  The rigged ballyhoo still the favorite bait for this region

According to Temo Verboonen, skipper of the Secuestro De Amor, and our on-the-spot representative, only a few boats fished this past week, but the report was good for those that went, reflecting good dorado catches and a few sailfish in the mix.  The clean water is 10-plus  miles offshore.  The inshore bite, when accessible, has been very good for groupers, big eye jacks, rainbow runners and smaller yellowfin tuna.  Roosterfish are there but the big wave action has prevented the boats from getting close enough to make good catches there.

I/Z Climate:  Mostly cloudy with scattered showers, almost daily, especially in the PM and nights, temps from 72 nights to 90 daytime highs and humid.

Sea Conditions:  The offshore waters are very fishable and some good action along the current breaks at the edge of the river/rain runoff, with temps in the 82-83 degree range.

Best Lure/Bait:  Rigged baits for the sailfish and dorado.

Very slow on anglers but still, very good on fishing, picking back up some steam for the week.  The boats are still fishing on the current line, separating the clean/dirty water from the rain run-off and the dorado action continues to be productive, especially for the bigger fish.  The dorado were almost all in the trophy class range this week with the largest fish checked in at 65 lbs.  Overall fish counts for the 8 fishing days offshore reflected 4 sailfish, 26 dorado and 30 yellowfin tuna, (also in the larger sizes, up to 90 lbs.).  The inshore super pangas reported for 6 days and landed 1 sailfish and 26 dorado, again with most off the fish in the trophy size ranges.

The Striped Marlin bite continued this week with most of the action taking place within 5 miles of the beach on the Pacific side between the lighthouse and the inside of the Golden Gate Bank.  Live bait tossed at tailing fish worked on about 40% of the fish seen and a few others were caught on trolled lures.  There were plenty of Sailfish to be found as well, we had one client who was covered up with all five lines going off at once on Tuesday, resulting in the release of three fish and the loss of two.  The Sailfish were also just off the beach, there seemed to be a good concentration of bait in the area.  There were reports of a few nice Blue Marlin this week but they were not biting hot and heavy.  I heard of several fish in the 250 pound class being released from the area of the 95 Spot and the 1150 and I am sure there were a few from the Gorda Banks as well.

Visiting tourists were greeted by Tropical Storm Julio this past weekend, as the system made landfall just to the west of Cabo San Lucas on Sunday afternoon and then continued on a path towards Muege before it finally was downgraded and dissipated over the northern Sea of Cortez. The storm brought some much need rainfall, anywhere from 3 to 10 inches were reported, winds of 50 miles per hour, with some higher gusts, this created very stormy ocean conditions and completely closed down all ports for Sunday, sportfishing fleets really did not start back full operations until Tuesday. Families had to be evacuated in certain flooded areas and there was quite a mess to clean up. Things are gradually returning back to normal now, while we keep a close watch to the south for any new storms that might develop, at this time it is clear on the horizon, but there still is another month of hurricane season and we will hope that no storms are too much stronger than Julio. .

Van Wormer Resorts Report

Fri Aug 29 2008, 05:36PM

It has been an unbelievable year for dorado.  Every week when I compile my fishing report numbers, I'm am astonished at how consistent the dorado numbers have been.  This week was no exception!  They may not be as big as everyone would like, but they are out there in large numbers.  And that is not to say that you won't come across the occasional 30-50 pound bull, but to be honest, the majority have been under 30lbs.  The other thing that has been really nice is that it doesn't matter which way you go to catch them, because they are everywhere.  Jim Gallivan of Santa Clarita, CA  fished for three days out of Palmas De Cortez this past week and he told me over the phone that some boats would go south and others would go north in the morning, and that when they all came back in in the late afternoon, every boat would be flying between 1-20 dorado flags.  Jim went on to say that he was fortunate enough to land a nice 35lb. bull along with about 30 smaller dorado, 15 yellowfin tuna, and a sailfish to boot.

There were not too many billfish landed this week.  A few sails, but not the numbers we were seeing earlier in the season, but with all that dorado and tuna in the water, no one is complaining.  That's it for this week amigos.  Saludos.....Eddie

According to Temo Verboonen, skipper of the Secuestro De Amor, very few boats fished the area over the past 14 days but those that did landed sailfish and dorado.  He reported a continued run-off from the rains and river overflows that is allowing for a stockpile of bait throughout the area.  The inshore roosterfish bite has picked up steam and there are good opportunities to target the bigger roosters.

IZ Climate:  Mostly cloudy with temps from 72 nights to 90 daytime highs, humid.

Sea Conditions:  Temps from 83 inshore to 85 offshore, more debris in the water from the runoffs and good clarity and calm waters.

Bait Supply:  Very good supply.
